An Album a Day Keeps the Doctor Away #21: Code Orange - I am King

Hi! Happy Sunday. So, remember yesterday when I said I’d return to the RNG fun times today. HA GOTTEM.

This morning I tuned into the Code Orange record release show on Twitch. And it was fucking incredible. As a result I’ve only really been listening to Code Orange today. And as luck would have it, I've (somewhat heinously) never fully listened to I am King. It was number 743 in my RNG playlist but god knows when I would’ve rolled that, so I’m bringing it forward.

Code Orange // I am King

I got into Code Orange in 2015. I listened to Love Is Love, the Full of Hell split, the 4-way split with Tigers Jaw etc, and Cycles a lot. I have fond memories of being an antisocial prat, sitting outside the halls before my lectures would start, listening to specifically Colours, Around My Neck, and My Body Is a Well. Then Forever dropped in 2017 and I was all in on that album. And fast forward to 2020, we now have Underneath (which is also fucking brilliant). In spite of all this, I’ve failed to ever give I am King the time it has undoubtedly deserved (until today).

And man this album is great. I'm kinda bummed I never really put any time into it till now. Can definitely see how it’s the beginning of this era of the band. I think it’s a great record but definitely gets better as it goes. I am King is a mission statement if ever I heard one, Unclean Spirit slams so hard it put me in my place. Then there’s trippy kind of psychopath feel of Alone in a Room with THOSE DRUMS; so damn satisfying. And that riff thing from Your Body Is Ready is like the prototype for the end of Kill the Creator. But my god, Thinners of the Herd. That bass is so thick and sludgy it feels like I’m drowning in a tar pit. What a brilliant track. And as a sign of things to come, this album definitely sets some kind of scene but at the same time, could never have prepared me for how far they’d stretch their sound. Glad I’ve finally given it the time it deserves.
