An Album a Day Keeps the Doctor Away #3: Strapping Young Lad - City

Welcome, friends, to day three of the next 1019 days of our lives. Today's number is 651. And 651 in the fantastical playlist of mystery and wonder is Strapping Young Lad's City.

Strapping Young Lad // City

Yo, Strapping Young Lad! Mr Hevy Devy himself! I've only ever heard one Strapping Young Lad track, but own two of their albums. Shoutout to Saints Row The Third which had the absolute rager, Love on it. And based on knowing and loving (ha, love pun) that song, I purchased both City, and Alien when I found them both at lifeline bookfest (and then proceeded to only ever listen to Love from either). City is great! It's like this weird, spacey, industrial, riff-heavy, unhinged, smackdown of an album. Like the bastard spawn of Fear Factory and Korn but wildly more fun than both. And hearing this album, a lot of Dir En Grey and some of the slight nuances of King 810 music now have a lot more context as they both seem to borrow from City (albeit very different facets of it). And that makes City feel familiar in all the right ways. I really like this album and I’ll definitely be coming back to it in the future. P.S. Please go listen to Home Nucleonics. Please.
